How Accurate is a Full Body DEXA scan?
A full-body DEXA scan is considered incredibly accurate in measuring bone mass and body composition. In fact, it’s one of the preferred methods for doing so! Things that skew a scan include irregular spinal curvature or people who have had spinal surgery in the past. Talk to one of our providers about your medical history prior to scheduling an exam to ensure it’s going to provide beneficial information for you.

What is a DEXA Scan?
DEXA stands for Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry, a safe, non-invasive imaging test using very low-dose X-rays.
It measures:
-
✔ Bone density to check bone strength
-
✔ Body composition (fat, lean muscle, and bone mass) with high precision
-
Painless, quick (often 6–30 minutes), and requires you to lie still while the scanner passes over you.

Why Should You Get a DEXA Scan?
For Your Bone Health
-
Diagnoses osteopenia or osteoporosis
-
Helps evaluate fracture risk
-
Gives you a good accurate baseline to tracks changes in bone density over time
For Your Body Composition
-
Provides a detailed breakdown of total body fat, lean muscle, and visceral (abdominal) fat
-
More accurate than scales or BMI alone
-
Great for athletes, fitness tracking, or wellness goals

When to get a Full Body DEXA scan?
Bone Density Guidelines
-
Standard medical recommendation:
-
Women age 65+
-
Men age 70+
